PTE Academic / IELTS

The PTE Academic is a computer-based English language assessment designed to evaluate an individual's proficiency in English. This exam is commonly taken by students and job seekers aiming to pursue education or immigration in English-speaking countries like the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The test measures various aspects of English language skills and is widely recognized by academic institutions and immigration authorities.

Test Format

The PTE Academic is composed of three distinct sections that assess different aspects of the English language. These sections comprehensively evaluate an individual's proficiency in English.

Part One: Speaking & Writing:

The speaking section of the PTE Academic assesses candidates' verbal communication skills. It begins with a personal introduction where candidates provide basic biographical information. Although this introduction does not contribute to the score, it helps academic institutions gain a general understanding of each candidate's background.

Following the introduction, candidates engage in various speaking tasks, which include:

  • Reading a displayed line of text aloud.
  • Describing a photograph or image.
  • Listening to a sentence and repeating it.
  • Providing brief responses (one or two words) to questions.

The section then transitions to writing tasks. Candidates read a passage of up to 300 words and provide a one-sentence summary of the text. The final part involves writing a 200-300 word essay on a given topic.

Typically, this section lasts between 77 and 93 minutes, allowing candidates to demonstrate their speaking and writing abilities within the allocated time.

Part Two: Reading

The reading comprehension section of the PTE Academic evaluates candidates' ability to understand written texts. Candidates read multiple passages and answer questions related to the content. The questions may include various formats such as multiple choice, fill in the blank, and re-order paragraphs.

This section is comparatively shorter in duration, typically lasting between 32 and 41 minutes. During this time, candidates engage in reading the passages and providing accurate responses to demonstrate their reading comprehension skills.

Part Three: Listening

The listening section of the PTE Academic comprises various audio recordings that candidates need to listen to and respond to accordingly. The tasks in this section include:

  • Summarizing spoken text: Candidates listen to a recording and write a brief summary of the information presented.
  • Multiple Choice: Candidates answer questions about a recording by selecting the correct answer from a list of options. Some questions have a single correct answer, while others may require multiple correct responses.
  • Fill in the Blanks: Candidates see a text with missing words and listen to a recording of the same text. They then fill in the blanks with the appropriate words.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: Candidates listen to a recording and choose the most suitable summary from a set of options.
  • Select Missing Word: Candidates select the missing word that best fits a gap in an audio recording.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: Candidates read a text and listen to a recording of the same text with minor changes. They identify the words that have been altered or removed.
  • Write from Dictation: Candidates transcribe a sentence after listening to the recording.

This section typically lasts from 45 to 57 minutes, allowing candidates to listen attentively and respond accurately to the given tasks.

PTE Scoring

The PTE Academic uses the Global Scale of English to report scores, which is represented by a thermometer-like scale. Your score report includes your overall score as well as separate scores for communicative and enabling skills.

The overall score reflects your overall proficiency in the English language, and it is determined by considering your performance across all sections of the test. The Global Scale of English assigns scores ranging from 10 to 90 points, with higher scores indicating a higher level of English proficiency.

In addition to the overall score, you also receive scores for communicative skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing) and enabling skills (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, oral fluency, spelling, and written discourse). These scores assess your performance in specific areas of language skills. Similar to the overall score, each communicative and enabling skill score falls between 10 and 90 points, providing a detailed evaluation of your abilities in these specific areas.

International English Language Testing System  (ILETS)

IELTS, which stands for the International English Language Testing System, is a renowned English language proficiency test developed and administered by the British Council in collaboration with IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English.

Recognized globally, IELTS is widely acknowledged as the most popular English language proficiency test for individuals seeking higher education opportunities or planning to migrate to English-speaking countries. It serves as a pathway for studying, advancing one's career, or settling in an English-speaking nation.

With a history spanning over 30 years, the IELTS system has consistently set the benchmark for English language testing. It has gained the trust and acceptance of more than 11,500 organizations in over 140 countries worldwide.

When you take an IELTS test, you can be assured that your results will be recognized by educational institutions, employers, professional bodies, and governments that require proof of your English language proficiency. Governments in countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom place their trust in IELTS for processing immigration applications.

How does IELTS work

IELTS was developed by a team of esteemed language assessment experts to comprehensively evaluate the skills necessary for successful study or work in an English-speaking country. The assessment covers the following areas:

  • Listening: This section assesses your ability to comprehend ideas, identify opinions, and follow the progression of an argument through listening exercises.
  • Reading: The reading component evaluates your capacity to grasp the overall meaning, main ideas, and specific details of written texts. It also measures your understanding of the author's implications and opinions.
  • Writing: In the writing section, your proficiency in producing a well-structured, accurate, and coherent response is assessed. This includes your ability to organize ideas effectively, employ a wide-ranging vocabulary, and demonstrate grammatical accuracy.
  • Speaking: The speaking test measures your aptitude to express and defend your opinions, share information on everyday topics and common experiences, and engage in spontaneous conversations. It evaluates your communication skills in a real-life context.

Through these four sections, IELTS provides a comprehensive evaluation of your English language abilities, ensuring that you possess the necessary skills to succeed in academic or professional endeavors in an English-speaking environment.
